Description
Pastoral ministry is demanding. It requires a consistent quality of presence that is difficult to keep amid church and community crises, the daily demands of ministry, and the general uncertainty of life. As pastors feel burned out and overwhelmed, we lose touch with the skills of compassion and empathy that are essential for pastoral ministry. If we have lost the awareness of ourselves in the presence of God, we cannot be present to others. When we find ourselves moving into rigid or chaotic states of mind, we have lost our capacity for “mindsight.” Mindsight, a skill described in interpersonal neurobiology studies, is a way to focus attention – first, on our inner experience, then on our interactions with other people, and finally on the integration of our full self with compassionate presence to others. This webinar introduces pastors and lay leaders to the skills of mindsight: openness, observation and objectivity. Participants will learn the signs of losing our capacity for mindsight, and be introduced to spiritual practices that cultivate and help us regain this important pastoral skill.
